Aigina durfte aber wieder an alter Stelle besiedelt worden sein, da es von Idrisi (N\u00e4na) als guter, von einer Burg verteidigter Hafen geschildert wird. Seit dem 4. Jh. (sicher seit dem 8. Jh.) Bistum (Suffragan von Korinth), vor 900 zum Erzbistum angehoben, in welchem Rang es bis ans Ende der byz. Zeit verblieb 1371 f\u00fcr kurze Zeit dem Metropoliten von Athen unterstellt. In der 2. H\u00e4lfte des 12. Jh. durch Piraten wieder fast entv\u00f6lkert, die die Insel als Operationsbasis ben\u00fctzten u. beherrschten. 1204 urspr\u00fcnglich den Venezianern zugedacht, doch tats\u00e4chlich dem Dukat von Athen als eigenes Lehen zugeh\u00f6rig, bis es nach dem Tod des Bonifacio da Verona (1317) durch Erbschaft in katalan. Besitz (Aifonso Faclrique) kam, wo es bis Ende 14. Jh. verblieb (castrum de la Eguena et Insula, Egena, Cugneria u. \u00e4.) wahrscheinlich Anfang 13. Jh. Verlegung der Hauptsiedlung in das Hinterland der Nordk\u00fcste, w\u00e4hrend an der Westk\u00fcste in sp\u00e4tbyz. Zeit lediglich ein kleiner Hafenort anzunehmen ist (\u2192 Mon). 1425 wurde auf Ersuchen der Cavopenna (seit 1394 Herren von Aigina) die Insel unter venez. Schutz genommen (Legena, Leiena) u. ging nach deren Aussterben (1451) direkt in den Besitz der Venezianer \u00fcber, die es durch einen Rektor verwalteten 1537 Eroberung durch die T\u00fcrken unter Chaireddin Barbarossa. \u2014 Weitere Belege in griech. und westlichen Portulanen.\r\nMon.: Im Bereich der heutigen Stadt, nahe dem Hafen, gut erhaltener, dreigeschossiger\r\nWehrturm (etwa 5 x 6,5 m, Eingang \u00fcber Freitreppe ins 1. Obergescho\u00df, an der S\u00fcdseite\r\nBrunnen); der sogenannte \u201eMorosini-Turm\u201c im Gel\u00e4nde der antiken Siedlung heute nicht\r\nmehr erhalten. Am Stadtrand (Bardia) nachjustinianische, dreischiffige Basilika, erhalten der Ostteil der Anlage mit au\u00dfen halbrunder Apsis u. Synthronon; Reste einer sp\u00e4tantiken, im 7. Jh. verfallenen Synagoge (Bodenrnosaik mit Bauinschrift).\r\n\u2014 Etwa 1 km \u00f6. der heutigen Stadt Kirche H. Theod\u00f6roi (Omorph Ekklsia), ein kleiner, einschiffiger, von einer L\u00e4ngstonne \u00fcberw\u00f6lbter Bau mit au\u00dfen dreiseitiger Apsis, laut Inschrift 1282 erneuert im Inneren gut erhaltene Fresken vom Ende des 13. Jh. \u2014 Reste der sp\u00e4tbyz. u. t\u00fcrkenzeitlichen Siedlung etwa 6,5 km \u00f6. der heutigen Stadt, nahe dem neuzeitlichen Kl. H. Nektarios, an den Abh\u00e4ngen eines 355 m hohen Berges, knapp 2 km von der Nordk\u00fcste, jedoch von dort nicht eingesehen (Flurname Paleochora); am Gipfel Ruine des Kastells (Umfassungsmauer mit je einem Tor am n. u. s\u00f6. Ende, im Inneren Reste von Zisternen u. eine Doppelkirche); von der Stadt selbst erhalten die Hauptlinien des Stra\u00dfennetzes (Stra\u00dfenbreite 1,5\u20142 m), Pl\u00e4tze, Hausruinen u. \u00fcber 35 Kirchen(ruinen), wovon \u00fcber 10 sp\u00e4tbyz., jedoch nur H. Nikolaos Maurikas (kreuzf\u00f6rmige Kuppelkirche, 1. Freskenschicht 2. H\u00e4lfte 12. Jh., 2. Schicht datiert 1522) vor 1300; an Kirchentypen dominieren kleine ein- oder zweischiffige Basiliken mit Tonnengew\u00f6lbe, sowie Kreuzkuppelkirchen, deren Kuppellast auf den L\u00e4ngsmauern ruht; in
