Jh. ?). Bei Benjamin von Tudela, der in der 2. H\u00e4lfte des 12. Jh. von Halmyros \u00fcber Besaina (Bissena) nach Thessalonik\u0113 reiste, eine hundertk\u00f6pfige Judengemeinde f\u00fcr Besainia bezeugt. Aus einem Brief des Micha\u0113l Psellos die Armut des Bistums bekannt. Im Vertrag des Alexios III. von 1198 mit den Venezianern die Episkepsis Vesenis (Episcepsis Besenae, \u1f10\u03c0\u03af\u03c3\u03c7\u03b5\u03c8\u03b9\u03c2 \u0392\u03b5\u03c3\u03ae\u03bd\u03b7\u03c2) genannt. Bei der Partitio Romaniae 1204 Vesna (Bessena, \u0392\u03b5\u03c3\u03c3\u03ae\u03bd\u03b7) zur Pertinentia Imperatricis, scil. der Frau Alexios\u2019 III., gerechnet. Nach der fr\u00e4nk. Landnahme in Thessalien ein latein. Bistum in Besaina (Vessinensis episcopus) installiert. Kaiser Heinrich wies nach dem Tode des Bonifaz von Thessalonik\u0113 dessen Gattin Margarete unter anderem auch die oben genannte Pertinentia Imperatricis in Thessalien zu. In diesbez\u00fcglichen Best\u00e4tigung durch Papst Innozenz III. 1210 werden neben Bessena \u2192 D\u0113m\u0113trias, \u2192 Archontoch\u014drion und die beiden \u2192 Halmyros genannt.\r\nMon.: Von den drei Kirchen in Aetolophos eine dem H. Nikolaeos Neos von \u2192 Bunaina geweiht. Anstelle einer fr\u00fchchristlichen oder byz. Kirche steht die im Volksmund Panagia genannte Kirche Koim\u0113sis tu Theotoku. Neben zahlreichen Spolien aus byz. Zeit (Marmorplatten, Kapitelle), die in der neuen Kirche verbaut sind, noch das Synthronon der alten Bischofskirche erhalten. Etwa 1,5 km n. von Aetolophos beim heute verlassenen Dorf Bathyrema byz.
