Ein Bistum Euboia belegt auf dem Konzil von Nikaia 325, etwa ab Mitte 5. Jh. unter dem Namen Chalkis, sp\u00e4testens seit 869/70 unter dem Namen Euripos, als 1. Suffragan von \u2192 Ath\u0113nai. Etwa 871 vergeblicher Flottenangriff des Emirs Esman von Tarsos auf die damals von einem Mauerring umgebene Stadt; ebenso erfolglos eine venez. Flotte, die 1171 die Stadt belagerte und z. T. (die Vorstadt mit dem Venezianerviertel ?) niederbrannte. Bereits seit dem 1. Byz. Handelsvertrag mit Venedig (1082) hier eine venez. Handelsniederlassung, die wohl bis 1204 durchgehend existierte. Im 12. Jh. fand Benjamin von Tudela eine j\u00fcd. Gemeinde (200 Seelen) vor, die auch sp\u00e4tbyz. nachweisbar ist; er hob die internationale Handelsbedeutung der Stadt hervor. Auch Idrisi schilderte die Umgebung von Igribus als fruchtbar und reich. Ende 1204 \u00dcbergabe an die Kreuzfahrer (unter Bonifaz von Montferrat), die auf der Felsklippe mit Euripos ein Fort bauten; fr\u00e4nk.-venez. Name der Stadt (und in der Folge der gesamten Insel ab 13. Jh. durch Verballhornung und Fehletymologie von Euripos Negroponte (mit zahlreichen Namensvarianten). Bei der Aufteilung Eub\u00f6as bleib die Stadt ungeteiltes Eigentum der Dreiherren Eub\u00f6as, Venedig, erhielt (weiterhin) ein Stadtviertel (la Lambardia). Der Bischof von Euripos, Theod\u014dros, leistete (offenbar im Einverst\u00e4ndnis mit seinem griech. Vorgesetzten) den Ob\u00f6dienzeid und konnte daher im Amt bleiben, seine Nachfolger freilich waren dann Lateiner (Suffragane d. latein. Erzbischofs von Athen). Das latein. Bistum sp\u00e4testens seit 1314 mit dem latein. Patriarchat von Kpl. junktimiert. Von griech. Seite bereits zwischen 1256 und 1282 (im Zuge der zweitweisen milit\u00e4rischen Wiedergewinnung Eub\u00f6as) Anhebung zur M\u0113tropolis, was zun\u00e4chst ohne Folgen blieb; 1366 Verwaltung der Metropolen Athen und Euripos dem M\u00f6nch Neophytos \u00fcberantwortet, doch wurde die griech. Priesterschaft wohl auch weiterhin durch einen Pr\u014dtopapas geleitet; zwischen der t\u00fcrk. Eroberung und 1474 endg\u00fcltige Einrichtung der Metropole (Suffragane \u2192 \u014creos, \u2192 Karystos, \u2192 Prothmos, \u2192 Aul\u014dn und Kanalia). Ab der 1209 erfolgten Belehnung der Dreiherren von Eub\u00f6a durch Venedig schrittweise Vergr\u00f6\u00dferung des venez. Machtbereichs durch Ausdehnung des Stadtviertels und \u00dcbernahme des Br\u00fcckenforts im Euripos (1256); 1257/58 kurze Besetzung durch Truppen von Achaia und R\u00fcckeroberung durch die Venezianer. 1317 Eroberung der (gesamten ?) Stadt durch die Katalanen, die jedoch bald wieder vertrieben wurden. 1332 Pl\u00fcnderung der Umgebung durch Umur Pa\u0161a und in der Folge (einmalige ?) Tributzahlung seitens des venez. Bailo; 1350 Pl\u00fcnderung der Umgebung, 1351 vergebliche Belagerung der Stadt durch die Genuesen, doch bedingen starke Sch\u00e4den die Erneuerung der Festungslagen seitens der Venezianer. 1438/39 Besuch Johannes\u0315  VIII. auf der Hin- bzw. R\u00fcckfahrt vom Unionskonzil; 1458 Besichtigung des Euripos durch Mehmed II.; 1470 Belagerung u. Eroberung der Stadt durch die T\u00fcrken. \u2014 Eine bewegliche Br\u00fccke aus Holz \u00fcber den Euripis belegt im 6. Jh., die Existenz von Stadtmauern schon im 9. und 10. Jh.; erstmals Bau eines Kastells auf der Klippe durch die Franken 1204, Ausbau durch die Venezianer; bereits in mittelbyz. Zeit beide H\u00e4fen, n. und s. der Meerenge, (\u03bb\u03b9\u03bc\u03ad\u03bd\u03b5\u03c2 \u0395\u1f50\u03c1\u03af\u03c0\u03bf\u03c5) in Ben\u00fctzung. \u2014 Neben dem Stadtnamen die sprichw\u00f6rtliche Bedeutung von Euripos f\u00fcr Unbest\u00e4ndiges immer gel\u00e4ufig.\r\nMon.:  Fund eines Fu\u00dfbodenmosaiks (8 x 9 m) von unbestimmbarem Bauwerk mit figuralen und pflanzlichen Darstellungen, datiert 1. H\u00e4lfte 5. Jh. \u2014 H. Paraskeu\u0113 (ma. Marienkirche), dreischiffige Holzdachbasilika mit je vier S\u00e4ulen und einem Pfeiler beiderseits, in ihren Grundz\u00fcgen in theodosianische Zeit datiert; vielleicht Ausbau im 12. Jh. (die diesbez\u00fcgliche Inschrift aber eher zum \u2192 Panagia Peribleptos-Kl. bei \u2192 Politika geh\u00f6rig), starke Gotisierung im 13. Jh. \u2014 Die venez. Stadtmauern samt Toren und das Br\u00fcckenfort auf einer Felsklippe im Euripos (mit seinerner Bogenbr\u00fccke zum b\u00f6otischen Festland und h\u00f6lzerner Ziehbr\u00fccke zur Insel) im 19. Jh. vernichtet, aber in Grundz\u00fcgen rekonstruierbar. \u2014 Die venez. Stadtwasserleitung f\u00fchrte von einer Quelle des Lilas-Flusses bei \u2192 Mistros \u00fcber das Lilas-Tal (\u2192 Lilanto) u. \u2192 Phylla nach Dokos, von wo sie die Stadt erreichte; erhaltene Reste der Wasserleitung: an der Stra\u00dfe Dokos \u2014 Chalkis zw\u00f6lf Pfeiler sowie Mauerreste (insgesamt auf 2,3 km kontrollierbar); am \u00f6.
