In engster N\u00e4he zum Hof gemeinsam mit den k\u00f6niglichen Kindern erzogen, studierte er an der Universit\u00e4t Padua und wurde 1555 nieder\u00f6sterreichischer Kammerrat, 1563 Hofkammerrat und 1568 Oberster Proviantmeister in Ungarn. 1554 erwarb er die Herrschaft Niederwaltersdorf, 1572 Herrschaft und Schlo\u00df Ebreichsdorf, wo er auch starb.\r\nHieronymus Beck gilt als einer der typischen Vertreter der Adelskultur seiner Zeit und war wahrscheinlich eine der gebildetsten Pers\u00f6nlichkeiten des nieder\u00f6sterreichischen Adels. Er beherrschte mehrere Sprachen und kam auf seinen ausgedehnten Bildungsreisen bis nach \u00c4gypten. Die von seinen Reisen mitgebrachten altt\u00fcrkischen Chroniken fanden in der Gelehrtenwelt gro\u00dfe Beachtung und geh\u00f6ren zu den wichtigsten Quellen der osmanischen Geschichte. Er war ein angesehener Sammler arch\u00e4ologischer Funde und besa\u00df eine bedeutende humanistische Bibliothek. Seine ber\u00fchmteste Sammlung ist das Becksche Portr\u00e4tbuch (nach einem sp\u00e4teren Besitzer auch Lambergsches Portr\u00e4tbuch), ein 320 Seiten umfassender Codex mit Kopien von insgesamt 235 Bildnissen. Die Deckfarbenbilder zeigen vorwiegend Herrscher aus verschiedenen L\u00e4ndern, aber auch Mitglieder des Adels sowie Wiener B\u00fcrger. Nach der Erhebung seines Vaters zum Ritter war Hieronymus Beck jenes Mitglied der Familie, das in den Herrenstand hineinwuchs und seinen S\u00f6hnen den Aufstieg in den Hochadel ebnete, die zu
